The social organization of matriarchal clan

Matriarchal clan commune has experienced a long process of development. In its heyday, villages with large population and large scale were generally formed. For example, Banpo in Xi'an and Jiangzhai in Lintong are typical village relics of matriarchal clan commune.

The site of Jiangzhai primitive village in Lintong is located on the second terrace on the East Bank of Linhe river at the foot of Lishan Mountain, covering an area of 50000 square meters. The village site has a strict layout. Two trenches divide the whole village into two parts: residential area and cemetery. There are three cemeteries outside the trench and residential area inside the trench. In the residential area, there is a central square with an area of more than 4000 square meters. Five buildings are distributed in four directions around the square. Each building group has a large house as the main body, and there are more than ten or twenty small and medium-sized houses nearby. The doors of all the houses face the square. There are some cellars for storing things or urn coffins for burying children near some buildings.

Such a village is a matriarchal clan commune.
