The only Dynasty in Chinese history without poor and lazy people

The 16 years from ad 8 to ad 23, in the annals of Chinese history, belong to a dynasty called "new dynasty". This dynasty, like a steel knife, divided the Han Dynasty into the Western Han Dynasty and the Eastern Han Dynasty.

The particularity of the new dynasty comes from the identity of the emperor of the founding of the people's Republic of China. This man was originally a nephew of the Empress Dowager of the Han Dynasty. His father died early, and he was not the royal family of the Han Dynasty. No matter how he looked at it, unless he started a rebellion, he was far away from the word "be an emperor". However, Wang Mang created such a miracle. Relying on his virtue and reputation, plus some mysterious auspicious omens, he was the first "abdication emperor" in Chinese history in 8 a.d. by virtue of destiny and people's will.

Wang Mang became emperor with the high hopes of all the people in the world. After he ascended the throne, he did not disappoint. He immediately issued a policy, announcing that all the land would be taken back and then redistributed, so that the poor could have land to cultivate.

Wang Mang not only wanted the poor to have land, but also ordered all the people to work as long as they were healthy, not to beg. If they were not willing to work, they would have to collect money and taxes. If they did not pay taxes and did not work, they would have to be forced to work by the government, but to provide food and clothing. In this way, Wang Mang's new dynasty can be said to be the only one without poor people and lazy people in Chinese history.

There were many policies Wang Mang tried out. In the Han Dynasty, the custom of buying and selling slaves was very serious. Some poor families often sold their children in disaster years. Many people became servants because of a deed of sale, and they would never turn over. After Wang Mang came to power, he immediately issued an imperial edict to stop all slave trade and restore their status as farmers.

One of the most wrong things Wang Mang did was to offend the four barbarians in the Han Dynasty and lower them to a lower level. This caused a hornet's nest. From Hun Danyu to Koguryo, these barbarians in Wang Mang's eyes all went to war. Wang Mang had to launch a crusade. As soon as the war broke out, the lives of the people were ruined, and the people were displaced, All in vain.

How should we evaluate Wang Mang? In feudal society, as a usurper, no matter who he is, his evaluation is extremely belittled. However, Wang Mang was elected to the throne by relying on the "public opinion" of people in the world. Some of his measures were praised by many poor people at that time. We can only say that Wang Mang is a political failure, but he is an extraordinary reformer !
